Advice of the Day

Pricing Your Product

Kristen Berman, behavioral scientist and founder of Irrational Labs, has extensive experience using behavioral science to improve product pricing, engagement, and conversion. She describes the top four commonly used quantitative willingness-to-pay methods:

  1. Van Westendorp Method: This method asks respondents four questions to determine the range of acceptable prices.

  2. Becker-DeGroot-Marschak (BDM) Method: This method asks participants to state the maximum amount they'd pay for an item, and then a random number is generated. If the participant's stated amount exceeds this, they must buy the item at the generated price.

  3. Multiple Price List Method: This approach involves participants indicating their willingness to buy at different price points.

  4. Discrete Choice-Based Method: This method presents multiple product options with varying features and prices and asks customers to choose one.
