Advice of the Day
How To Build a High-Performance Culture
Gokul Rajaram, board member at Coinbase and Pinterest, outlines a strategy for building a high-performance culture in organizations:
Removing Low Performers: Teams should remove the bottom 10% of performers to maintain a high standard. A KPI for this approach is the non-regrettable annual attrition rate, which should be at least 5% for teams larger than 50 members.
Supporting High Performers: Teams should support the top 10% of performers to keep them motivated and committed to the company. The KPI here is the attrition rate of top-rated performers.
Linking Compensation to Performance: Rajaram suggests a two-year initial grant cycle with subsequent performance-based grants at the end of each year, ensuring that employees always have two years of performance-tied stock compensation ahead. The KPI for this is the percentage of employees on these 1-2 year performance-tied grant cycles.
