OpenClaw is one of the most groundbreaking and essential open source projects in recent history, and helped introduce the agentic era in AI. It started in November 2025 as Warelay, then morphed into Clawdbot (a play on Anthropic’s “Claude”), and a brief stint as Moltbot. Finally, in January of 2026, founder Peter Steinberger declared the project “OpenClaw.” It remains one of the most starred projects in GitHub history, and currently has over 70,000 forks and 3.2 million monthly active users.
